Joseph Waugh, 60, Stewartville
Joseph W. Waugh, age 60, of Stewartville, Minn., passed away peacefully at his home on Friday March 31, 2017 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was sur-rounded by his loving family.
Joseph Wesley Waugh was born on March 28, 1957 in Rochester, Minn. to Kenneth and Fern (Blauer) Waugh. He grew up on the family farm, attending Stewartville schools, graduating from Stewartville High School in 1975.
Joe had his hand in many ventures, including bartend-ing at The Kahler, farming with his family, and selling insurance for Safeway Insur-ance Company.
Joe was married on July 6, 1985 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Green Bay, Wis., to Diane Lynn Maccoux. The newlyweds settled in Kasson, Minn., where they started their family and opened Waugh Insurance in Mantorville, Minn.
Joe had a long career in the insurance industry, first with Safeway and most recently with Essig Insurance. In 1997, Joe and Diane moved to the family farm in rural Stewart-ville, where they raised their four daughters and have con-tinued to make their home.
Joe was a lifelong farmer with a passion for his hors-es and cows. He was also
co-owner of the Down Under Bar in Stewartville for a short time. Diane has been employed for 34 years as a Registered Nurse at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
Joe was a parish member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Stewartville. He served on the Mantorville Fire Department from 1986 to 2009. Joe was a longtime member of the Stewartville Sportsmen’s Club and past member of the Stewartville Jaycees. He was elected to the Stewartville School District Board in 2006 and served until his health caused early resignation in 2016.
Joe had a special love for horses, which he grew up riding and showing in 4-H. His daughters followed in his footsteps, also showing their beloved horses at the Olmsted County Fair.
The Waugh family enjoyed going on horseback riding trips throughout the Midwest, most recently to Missouri. The family has treasured summers in Brainerd, where they boat, fish and sit around the campfire.
Joe was an active volun-teer with Stewartville Youth Basketball, serving as tour-nament director for 13 years. Joe and Diane avidly followed their daughters’ athletics. He was a big fan of the Minne-sota Twins and John Deere tractors.
Joe was always eager to vis-it with friends, old and new, and loved time spent with his family. He especially loved to prepare a good meal, which always included mashed potatoes and gravy. Joe was a jack of all trades, and a true handyman, spending many hours working on the farm.
The Waugh family would like to thank all the health-care workers at Mayo Clinic. A special thank you to Dr. Keith Bible for his wonderful care and dedication. Our fam-ily would also like to thank Pastor Bob Bergland and Tom Lofgren for their endless sup-port for Joe and our family.
Joe is survived by his wife, Diane and four daughters, Renee (Joshua) Johnson
of Fountain, Minn.; Rachel (Nathan) Askelson, Elizabeth, and Julianne all of Stewart-ville; sister Delores Kaiserlik of Rush City, Minn.; two granddaughters, Adelynn and Ayla Johnson, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his par-ents, sister Phyllis Fritsch, and two brothers, Marvin and William Waugh.
